Your contributions

The IRS limits your pre-tax contributions to your City of Detroit Deferred Compensation Plan and Trust. For current IRS limits, visit vanguard.com/contributionlimits.

Pre-retirement catch-up contributions

You may be able to take advantage of the plan’s “pre-retirement catch-up provision” if you are within three years of retirement. The pre-retiree pre-tax contribution limit is the lesser of:

  • Twice the basic annual limit.
  • The basic annual limit plus the amount by which you, in all prior years, have deferred less than the maximum amount.

Age 50 and older catch-up contributions

If you will reach age 50 or older by the end of the year, and you contribute the maximum allowed, you may make catch-up contributions. Catch-up contributions allow you to save above the normal IRS annual limit on a pre-tax basis. Note: Age 50 and older catch-up contributions are not available if you are already making pre-retirement catch-up contributions.

Contribution changes

Twice a year, you can change the amount deducted from your paycheck:

  • April through May. Changes take effect the first pay period in July.
  • October through November. Changes take effect the first pay period in January.

To change your contributions, call Vanguard at 800-523-1188 to request a copy of a payroll deduction card (PDC). Indicate the exact dollar amount you want withheld from each paycheck.

Note: You can stop contributing at any time during the year.
